How to check if a Turkish man is married: 9 ways that actually work
This question is asked more often than any other, and for good reason: a hidden marriage remains the most common lie in international dating. Below we look at which documents in Turkey really show marital status, what you can verify yourself, which signs give the deception away and how the platform protects you.
In short: a Turkish citizen's marital status appears in the population registry extract (nüfus kayıt örneği), which he can download himself from e-Devlet in a minute. An honest man will show it without taking offence. A refusal to show the document, calls only at 'convenient' hours and a family that never appears in your relationship matter more than any words.
No website, ours included, has access to the Turkish state registry. Every check below relies on documents the man himself provides and on signs you observe. Treat them as a whole, not as a single piece of proof.
Which documents in Turkey show marital status
The new Turkish identity card has no marital status field, so a photo of an ID proves nothing. Marital status is visible in two documents, and the person obtains both himself.
- Population registry extract (nüfus kayıt örneği). Generated on e-Devlet in one minute, it contains the line 'medeni hali' (marital status): bekâr (single), evli (married), boşanmış (divorced), dul (widowed). The document carries a date and a barcode for verification.
- Certificate of eligibility to marry (evlenme ehliyet belgesi). Issued to those about to marry, including to a foreigner. A married man cannot obtain it, so his willingness to get one already says a lot.
- A divorce decree or court ruling if he says he is divorced. In Turkey a divorce exists only through a court; 'we just separated' legally means the marriage still stands.
How to ask for the document without causing offence
In Turkish culture family and marriage are discussed openly, and serious intentions are expected to be backed by actions. If you explain that this is about your safety and not distrust of him personally, an honest man will react calmly. Many offer to show the document themselves once the conversation turns to the future.
Ask for a fresh extract dated today, not an old screenshot. Check that the name, date of birth and document number match what he told you about himself earlier. If he stalls for weeks, cites 'being busy' or promises 'later', treat that as the answer.
What you can check yourself
Nine methods below need no access to any registry. None is proof on its own, but three or four matching signs give a clear picture.
- Video calls at different times of day, including evenings and weekends, from home rather than from the car or the office. A married man is almost always available only in 'windows'.
- Meeting the family on video. In Turkey the mother and sisters are very present in a son's life. If months have passed and you have not seen a single relative, ask why.
- Social media going back several years, not just the last months. Photos with the same woman, children, anniversary wishes, comments from relatives.
- The profiles of his friends and relatives: shared photos do not get deleted there. See who is tagged at family holidays, weddings and bayram gatherings.
- A ring mark on the finger and the habit of taking a ring off. It sounds trivial, but it shows on video.
- An address check. Ask him to show the flat on video. Women's shoes by the door, children's things and two toothbrushes are hard to explain.
- Holidays and bayrams. If he spends every Kurban Bayramı, New Year and holiday 'with his parents' while unreachable, that is the typical pattern of a hidden marriage.
- A reverse image search on his photos. It immediately weeds out stolen pictures and the 'profiles' scammers reuse.
- Mutual contacts and complaint history. If you met on a platform with identity verification, you can report him and ask the team to check whether other women have complained about the same person.
Signs of a hidden marriage that repeat in every story
Women who have been through this describe the same details. Pay attention if at least three match.
- He never calls first at an 'inconvenient' hour and often writes at night, when 'everyone is asleep'.
- He has two phones or a second 'work' number that is always off in the evening.
- He talks about the future but avoids concrete dates: a visit, meeting the family, documents for the marriage.
- He asks you not to post photos together and not to tag him on social media.
- He describes a 'complicated divorce' that has dragged on for years but cannot show a single court decision.
- He changes the subject abruptly when the certificate of eligibility to marry comes up, even though an official marriage in Turkey is impossible without it.
What Turkish law says
Turkey recognises only the civil marriage registered at the marriage office (evlendirme dairesi). A religious ceremony on its own creates no marriage and gives no rights. Bigamy is a crime: Article 230 of the Turkish Penal Code punishes entering a second marriage while the first is in force, and also holding a religious ceremony without civil registration.
To marry a foreigner, a man must submit the certificate of eligibility to marry to the marriage office, so reaching registration while married is impossible. The danger is not the registration but the years of 'long-distance relationship' during which the hidden marriage never surfaces.
